Don't change who you are. Learn to believe in yourself and be ok with who you are now. You will gain confidence and attract people to you. Never let anyone else make you think you are less, because you are as good as anyone else.

Don't ever change your personality to fit in. I tried that myself and it got me nowhere- all it got me was a bunch of friends that didn't really like me that much and ditched me the second I started to show what I was really like. There's a wide variety of people out there and there are many who would accept you how you are.
I think the key is just talking to and being friendly to lots of people. I know it's difficult, but try to ask friendly, casual questions to people. Start by just saying 'Hi,' and smiling as you pass people. Don't worry if they don't say hi back, either they will next time or they're not worth your time. Don't worry if you get a few weird looks, the more people you talk to the more chances you have for them to like you. Once you've asked people a few questions, don't be nervous to ask for an email address, most people are very casual about email addresses and will give it to you- and then email conversations are much more informal and easy.
Also, make sure you shower every day, brush your teeth and get a hair-cut or some new clothes if you need them. Don't be afraid to try something a bit different, It's surprising how much a new style of shirt will get you noticed.
Also, sit down in front of the TV for a little bit and listen to the top 40 on the music channels, or watch a couple of films. Rent some films and TV shows that you've heard people talking about at school and watch them so that you have lots of things to make conversation about. If you DON'T like those films or music, don't lie and say that you do. Tell people you don't and get into friendly debates about it!
you cant just all the sudden be cool, you grow up with a group of friends and suddenly your all cool.. confidence is key, be funny and depends on how old you are, you probably have to be perverted, thats what she said jokes or whatever.. talk to the cool guys, and if you are not semi decent looking, forget it
